An older home is not automatically unsuitable

Stone walls, suspended floors, original features and older radiators can make design more involved, but they do not create a simple yes-or-no rule. The assessment should calculate heat loss room by room and test the system options against the way you use the home.

What needs to be checked?

Room-by-room heat loss

Wall, floor, roof, window, ventilation and design-temperature assumptions reveal how much heat each room needs.

Radiator output at lower temperatures

Existing radiators may be adequate in some rooms. Others may need larger or different emitters.

Pipework and flow

Older small-bore or altered systems need checking so the required water flow can reach each emitter.

Hot-water space

Most air-to-water systems need a suitable cylinder and workable routes between indoor and outdoor equipment.

Fabric improvements

Loft, floor or wall insulation and draught reduction may improve comfort and reduce the size of system required, but improvements should be prioritised sensibly.

Do all the radiators need replaced?

No. A blanket replacement is not good design. Each radiator should be compared with the room’s calculated heat loss at the proposed flow and return temperatures.

  • Some radiators may already be large enough.
  • Some rooms may need a larger double-panel radiator.
  • A fan-assisted emitter can be useful where wall space is limited.
  • Underfloor heating may work well but is not essential.

Should insulation come first?

Low-disruption improvements such as loft insulation and draught reduction are often sensible before final sizing. More complex measures need to be judged on cost, moisture risk, disruption and the character of the property.

A heat pump does not require a perfect modern house. It requires a design that reflects the house as it will actually be when the system is installed.
