What you need to know
The better choice depends on the home and the proposal
A boiler replacement can be a smaller initial project where the existing system is suitable. A heat pump may require emitter, cylinder, electrical or pipework changes, but can move the home away from direct fossil-fuel combustion and may qualify for Scottish support.
Running-cost claims need transparent assumptions about heat demand, seasonal performance, gas and electricity prices, standing charges and the efficiency of the boiler being compared.
Request a £0 home survey and written whole-system quote
Share the home, current boiler and heating costs so FLO can discuss a property-specific heat-pump scope rather than a generic appliance comparison.
Compare complete installation scopes
A low boiler quote and a whole-system heat-pump proposal may not include equivalent work. The heat-pump price can include a cylinder, radiator changes, electrical work, controls and outdoor installation that are absent from an appliance-only comparison.
Ask both proposals to describe removals, distribution changes, controls, commissioning, warranties and ongoing service requirements. Funding should be shown separately from the gross project price.
- Equipment and controls
- Radiator, pipework and cylinder changes
- Electrical and external work
- Commissioning and handover
- Warranty, servicing and aftercare
Understand how comfort is delivered
Boilers commonly deliver high-temperature heat in shorter periods. Heat pumps are often designed around steadier operation and lower heating-water temperatures. That does not mean the home should be cold; it means emitter output and controls must suit the strategy.
Households used to sharp on-and-off schedules may need a different approach. The proposal and handover should explain intended temperatures, setbacks and weather compensation.
Model running costs with declared assumptions
Start with annual space-heating and hot-water demand. Estimate the electricity needed using a reasonable seasonal performance assumption, then apply an appropriate tariff. Compare that with the fuel input required by the boiler at a stated efficiency and tariff.
The result is a scenario, not a guarantee. Weather, comfort settings, hot-water use, tariff changes and system operation all affect actual bills.
- Annual heat demand
- Seasonal heat-pump performance assumption
- Boiler efficiency assumption
- Relevant unit rates and standing charges
- Any retained gas use for cooking or another appliance
Include long-term and practical factors
Outdoor space, cylinder space, noise, visual impact and disruption can affect whether the heat-pump project is sensible. Boiler flue and gas-supply considerations remain relevant on the alternative side.
Also compare maintenance, expected replacement planning and how each option fits future renovation or solar plans. These factors should inform the household decision without being converted into unsupported lifetime savings.
Keep in mind: Request written calculations and scope. Avoid deciding from a generic online saving figure that does not describe your home, tariffs and current boiler.

Questions people ask
Is a heat pump always cheaper to run than gas?+
No. The result depends on heat demand, seasonal performance, tariffs, boiler efficiency and how both systems are used.
Will a heat pump heat the home as quickly as a boiler?+
Heat pumps are commonly designed for steadier operation at lower water temperatures. Comfort should be designed around that operating pattern rather than boiler-style bursts.
Should I remove the gas meter?+
That is a household and system decision. Consider whether any gas appliances remain, standing charges, disconnection arrangements and the final heating design.
Does the grant make every heat-pump project worthwhile?+
No. Funding can change the upfront comparison, but suitability, full scope, expected operation and household priorities still matter.
